After months of legal twists and heated debate, the central government has officially cleared the controversial film “Udaipur Files” for theatrical release. This decision, made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, brings closure to a protracted review process that attracted significant attention and sparked national debate over freedom of expression and communal sensitivities.

Certification Process and Government Ruling

The journey to the big screen hasn’t been easy for “Udaipur Files.” The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had already flagged several issues with the film, ultimately requiring 55 edits before giving its approval. The producers agreed to every mandated change and even made a few voluntary adjustments themselves.

Despite all these efforts, several petitions had already been filed against the release of the film. The ministry, after extended debate, finally determined that the objectors did not justifiably prove any points that would cause it to take any further action against the certification granted by the CBFC. According to Under Secretary Santosh Kumar Maurya, the objections “failed to persuade” the government to take any further action. Officials argued that due process was followed in the case.

Legal Hurdles and Courtroom Drama

“Udaipur Files” first came under a legal cloud when the Delhi High Court stayed its release. Petitioners, including high-profile religious leaders and individuals named in the original case, argued that the movie risked stirring social discord and influencing ongoing court proceedings.

The legal saga continued as the petitioners approached the Supreme Court, which declined to extend the ban but directed them back to the High Court. Questions even arose over whether the government was overstepping its powers by demanding specific cuts underscoring the complex interplay between creative freedom and government oversight in India.

What the Film Portrays

At its heart, “Udaipur Files” dramatizes the tragic murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur who was killed in June 2022. The murder, filmed and shared widely online, shocked the nation. The crime was allegedly provoked by Lal’s online support for then-BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, whose remarks about religious figures had earlier fuelled nationwide tensions. With Vijay Raaz leading the cast and Amit Jani producing, the film promises a hard-hitting portrayal of real-life violence. Critics, though, have voiced concerns that the narrative might deepen existing divides in society.

Remembering the Real-Life Tragedy

The shocking killing of Kanhaiya Lal occurred when two men, posing as customers, entered his shop and attacked him. They later claimed their actions were retribution for comments made on social media comments situated within a wider storm sparked by political controversy and international diplomatic fallout.

Current Status and Families’ Voices

While the murder case remains with the National Investigation Agency and is still pending in court, Kanhaiya Lal’s family sees the film’s release as a step towards making the public aware of their pain. “It’s not against any religion it’s raising its voice against terrorism,” said the victim’s son, Yash Sahu, who passionately hopes for justice even after three years of waiting.

Filmmaker’s Perspective and Security Concerns

Amit Jani, the film’s producer, thanked the government for supporting the film’s release and acknowledged the risks faced during production and promotion. Considering ongoing tensions, Jani has been provided with heightened security. Recent meetings with ministry officials underscored the seriousness surrounding the film’s launch.

A Precedent for Tough Content

This decision is more than just about a single movie. It reflects how India’s film regulatory system handles complex, emotionally charged stories based on realevents. It also draws attention to the fine balance regulators must strike between upholding freedom of expression and safeguarding public harmony.

By permitting “Udaipur Files” to hit the theatres, the government established a crucial benchmark on how the country navigates between artistic expression and social responsibility.
